For most women, pregnancy and new motherhood is a magical time in their lives. In reality, most new mothers experience worry, disappointment, guilt, frustration, and even anger and fear. Becoming a mother is an identity shift, and one of the most significant physical and psychological changes a woman will ever experience. During this time of motherhood, anxiety isn’t too far hiding in the shadows looking to disrupt your mental health.
We would love to share these tips to help new mothers keep calm while enjoying the precious moments with their bundle of joy.
You don’t take a class; you’re thrown into motherhood and learn from experience
1. Talk about it
When you feel your anxiety spike, it’s important to tell someone. Your partner, a close friend or family member may be able to offer support. Simply sharing your thoughts and feelings with others may be enough to keep those thoughts from taking over your everyday life. Keeping these feelings to yourself is the worst thing you can do.
2. Free your mind
Try activities that help your body release endorphins without working up a sweat, such as:
- meditation
- acupuncture
- massage therapy
- deep breathing exercises
- journaling
3. Rest Up
Though sleep may seem impossible with a newborn, making it a priority may help significantly with anxiety symptoms. Work with your partner to set up a schedule where it will allow you both to get adequate sleep. Because as we know, no sleep means tons of coffee and mood swings; causing you to experience heavy anxiety. Call Grandpa and Grandma to help you babysit for a couple of hours; this is a perfect time to get that well-needed zzzz.
4. Exercise more
Exercise has been shown to decrease overall levels of tension, elevate and stabilize mood, improve sleep, and improve self-esteem. About five minutes of aerobic exercise can begin to stimulate anti-anxiety effects. Take the kids out for a walk or join a local gym. Some gyms offer free daycare which will allow you to spend some time to yourself and have a great workout.
5. Support Groups
Check out local support groups for new mothers. In these groups, many mothers are in the same situation. You can share ideas and tips that will help you in many ways. You can also make good friendships through these groups.
