sleep anxiety

Many times our anxiety can prevent us from getting a good night’s rest. We might be overthinking about what we need to do the next day and not be able to turn our minds off to get that rest we all need. Sometimes our anxiety may prevent us from staying asleep. Not getting enough sleep can lead to mood swings, lack of concentration, and overall negatively affect your physical and mental health. Here are some tips on how you can get back to being a sleeping beauty:

1. White noise

Have a fan on or get a white noise machine to help you stay asleep throughout the night. White noise machines give you options on what kind of noises work best for you. You can have ocean waves, crickets chirping, or fire cracking if you’re not keen on having static playing all night long.

2. Create a nightly routine

Go to sleep at the same time every night and get up at the same time in the mornings, even on weekends. A routine can improve your sleep tremendously. Your body will get used to the times you set, making it easier to fall asleep and get up. This also helps your body to feel more energized throughout the day. A routine can include activities like reading or journaling, taking a shower, or a skincare regime. Turn the tv off and put away your phone screen before bedtime. This helps your brain to settle down as screen time overstimulates your brain right before bed.

3. Stay hydrated

Drinks lots of water throughout the day, and eat ALL the watermelon. Try to avoid caffeine or alcohol too late in the day. Even though your body is mostly still while you sleep, it’s actually an active period where your body restores chemical balances, heals and recovers. Being dehydrated when you go to sleep will affect the way your body restores itself. Women should drink at least 11 cups (or more) of water per day!

4. Use a diffuser

Diffusing essential oil at night is a great way to calm yourself and fend off insomnia. Lavender is the most common, and effective, scent if you want to drift off into dreamland. That’s probably why it is used in so many baby products; babies and parents need plenty of sleep! Lavender is shown to improve sleep quality while alleviating insomnia and restlessness. You can even get lavender scented dryer sheets; throw your pillowcases or sheets in the dryer right before you go to bed and dive into a warm, cozy, cave of goodness.. zzzz.
